Not everything that you have in your home has value, to you or to anyone else. Just because you’ve had it for years, doesn’t mean it is valuable or that you even have an attachment to it. You may think that because you’ve never been without it that now you can’t live without it. This is simply not the case. You can live without things in your home, whether you realize it or not. Sometimes you need guidance to realize this and an organization consultant is that person who will guide you through the process.
An organization consultant is not someone who just comes in with a shovel and trash can and cleans out your house. They are there to guide you to learn how to make sensible decisions. Your inability to make decisions and organize has landed you in this position so your thinking process needs to change. You can’t change your thinking and habits overnight, which is why an organization consultant can be a great resource. This person will meet with you for several days, over the period of several weeks, or even months, whatever it takes to get you back on the right track.
Being disorganized may be your natural tendency, but you can develop habits of how to deal with your clutter that lessen that weakness in your life. There are some people who are just naturally organized and can stay that way. That is a personality strength. They have other weaknesses, but organization is not one of them. Others may be naturally disorganized and truly struggle with how to deal with the things in their lives such as mail, excess of anything, and how to enjoy things without obsessing about them.
It is important to remember that just because you are getting the advice of an organization consultant, it does not mean you are a bad or lazy person. It is a weakness you may have that others may not have. When you hire an organization consultant, they have most likely seen many messy spaces so yours will not be shocking to them. They need to know your story and see all the possible problem areas so don’t feel as though you should keep anything from them. They are not there to judge you, but rather, give you guidance and help.
