Treating Common Denture Problems

by | Jan 7, 2013 | Health and Fitness

Dentures are a popular choice for people who have lost their teeth, but most people also experience a range of complaints with their dentures, from inconvenient slipping to gum soreness and mild infections. These conditions are normal and treatable. With the proper care of your dentures in Moorhead, and regular checkups with your dentist, most of these problems can be solved quickly so you can get on with your life. It’s important to take the following steps when denture problems arise, and to call your dentist for advice.

Dentures that slip when you eat and talk

It’s common for dentures to slip when you’re eating and talking, especially for new wearers. Just like with any new device, your dentures in Moorhead will take some getting used to. Over time you’ll learn how to chew, talk, and wear them in a way that reduces slipping and discomfort. It helps to ease into wearing them by eating and speaking slowly, and trying different foods and denture products gradually to see what works best for you. When eating, choose soft foods at first and chew slowly with both sides of the mouth. Practicing at home will help you gain confidence with speaking and eating with your dentures. Your dentist may recommend a dental adhesive, which can solve most of the problems with slipping dentures. You’ll want to use a moderate amount, as too much adhesive can cause further problems with irritation and may interfere with the healthy stimulation of the gums and dental ridges.

Denture pain and common infections

Pain from wearing dentures can result from them slipping across your gums, to several types of infections. How the dentures fit can also be an issue. The shape of your mouth is always changing, so over time your dentures in Moorhead won’t fit as properly as they used to. It’s important to see your dentist for frequent checkups so he or she can adjust your dentures when necessary. Don’t try to adjust them yourself, as this can cause damage or even worse problems with gum irritation.

A few types of infections, called cheilosis or stomatitis, are caused by the buildup of too much yeast in the mouth. These infections result in painful cracking at the corners of the mouth, to mouth redness or small red bumps at the roof of the mouth, beneath where the dentures lie. Medication prescribed by your dentist can take care of these infections. Proper denture and mouth care will greatly reduce the chances of infection caused by yeast and bacteria. Rest your gums at night by taking your dentures out (always soaking them in a glass of lukewarm water or denture solution), and letting your gums breathe. This will help with soreness and keep your mouth healthy.
