Eyebrows are a really important part of the face. In combination with the eyelashes, they frame the eye and give it definition. All beauticians are familiar with shaping women’s eyebrows, and have a range of styles that are appropriate to different face shapes and different fashions.
However, those styles usually don’t work well on men’s faces. Male faces are differently shaped, and they need a different look. Instead of using the light, feminine look you’re familiar with, you’ll probably need to develop a range of strong, masculine eyebrow styles for effective male grooming.
Basic trimming and plucking
Men’s eyebrows are often extremely unruly. They can have some extremely long, coarse hairs, giving a shaggy, unkempt look which affects their whole appearance. It’s extremely common to have substantial hair between the brows, creating a unibrow. As men age, this becomes more and more extreme, until it starts to look like they have a fuzzy caterpillar above each eye.
You probably don’t want to reduce a man’s eyebrows to the same extent that you would with a woman. You’re not aiming to create a thin little pencil line of hairs. However, neatening up their eyebrows can make a huge difference. Trim away or pluck out those long, straggly hairs, and you’ll see an immediate change. Create a definite eyebrow line, and give them a real shape. And then clear away between the eyebrows to remove that untidy unibrow.
Male eyebrow shapes
Men’s eyebrow shapes are flatter and less arched than women’s eyebrow shapes. When you’re creating a shape, make it fatter and give it rounded tips rather than pointed ends. The eyebrows are generally lower and closer to the eyes. These shapes add strength and masculinity to a male face.
Colouring
In middle-aged and older men, grey eyebrows are a mixed blessing. On some men, it can give a distinguished, serious look which works well and looks attractive. For other men, though, it can look weak and reduce their masculinity. You’ll have to discuss with your client about the way they want to look, and decide what will work best with their hair colour. If they’re dyeing their hair to cover up their grey, then they may want to consider dyeing their eyebrows to match. This will give a more pleasing effect and make it less obvious that they’re colouring their hair.
