The Pros and Cons of DLP Projectors

by | Feb 13, 2014 | Shopping

If you are shopping for a projector you might be surprised at how many options are available out there. DLP projectors use digital light processing to project images as opposed to liquid crystal display (LCD) or light emitting diode (LED). DLP are very well received and can provide an excellent option for your projector needs. Here are some of the pros and cons of DLP projectors to help you decide if they appeal to you:

How DLP Works

DLP is a reflective projector. This means it uses reflection in order to project images. A DLP chip contains up to two million tiny mirrors. These mirrors are even smaller than the width of a human hair. The mirrors work together creating light or dark pixels to project the images. The pixels are in gray scale and then with the use of a light beam that is sent through a color wheel. Each segment produces colors in red, blue or green or cyan, magenta or yellow depending on the model. Depending on the type of DLP projector it can produce from 16.7 million to 35 trillion colors.

Pros of a DLP Projector

The chip allows for an image free of dust specs compared to other types of projectors. These projectors are also resistant to color decay and cannot have misalignments. DLP projectors also tend to provide a sharper image during fast movement which means less blurring. The brightness of the DLP projector also tends to be better. The single chip DLP is the best for convergence as they do not require adjustments like LCD or LED models.

Cons of a DLP Projector

There are some cons along with the benefits of DLP projectors. DLP projectors can sometimes have rainbows around objects especially when appearing against darker backgrounds. Black levels and contrast do not work as well on DLP’s.

People who opt for DLP’s tend to love them. You can check out the differences in a showroom and decide which seems to work best for you. You can consider where you will be using your projector, what your budget is and where you will be using it. These things will all work together to help you make the best decision for your needs.
